SkinMedica's Age Defense Retinol Complex 1.0 enhances the skin's appearance to promote a smoother, rejuvenated complexion. Formulated for skin types pre-conditioned to retinol treatments, it minimizes the appearance of age spots and wrinkles. It also improves elasticity and works effectively to visibly reduce acne scars. Apply a single pump to face in the evening. If you have never used a retinol product before, begin by limiting use to twice a week, gradually increasing frequency to every other night, and then advancing to each evening or as tolerated. Mild redness, peeling and irritation is expected when using this product. Use daily sun protection with SPF 20 or higher during use of this product. Avoid getting in eyes. If contact occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water.

The pump rules!
I had to go VERY VERY thin and use a much more intense moisturizer. A solid retinol but step it down to .5 maybe, even if you skin is used to a stroner over-the-counter of another brand. Love the pump.

Gentle Retinol
I've used retinol for many years, so I have a decent tolerance of it. I was so excited to see a 1.0 version made by Skinmedica. I think I had some mild burning on my upper cheekbones, near my eyes, for the first day or so. After that, smooth sailing and I use it every night on some part of my face. I do my forehead and around my mouth daily, and apply to my whole face every other. The only word u have for it's consistency is soft. Once applied, it melts into my skin and that's the last I think about it. I know for sure my forehead lines, elevens, and smile lines have faded almost completely. If your skin can take it, this will amaze you! The packaging is beautiful and classy and I get excited to pat it on every time!

Really works
I started with the .5 strength and just tried this 1.0 version. I did notice that it was stronger (some peeling and a bit more redness) but that could be due to the fact that I also used an exfoliating cleanser (which was probably too much). I think these retinol products are worth the money. You only need the one pump. I've read that you just "dot" it on in several spots and that your skin somehow will distribute it. I also like the fact that you can unscrew the top and use up all the product so no waste.

Essential product BUT SHORT SHELF LIFE!
I can't live without this product. At 52, it is literally the ONLY thing that controls my breakouts. For effectiveness, I would give it 10 stars if I could. However, I have a serious issue with it and is the reason for taking away 2 stars: the active ingredients "goes bad" over time, so I have limited time to use it once I've opened the bottle. Which means I can't ration it out over 4-5 months in an attempt to save some money. After ordering 5 bottles of this over the past few years, here's my experience: when I first open the product, it is always a pale yellow color. This is when it's most effective - my skin dries out if I use it several days in a row, my zits disappear, my complexion gets glowy. Then one day I notice how the product is a bit darker yellow, and within 7-10 days, my skin is not so glowy, it doesn't react to the product at all, and breakouts come back. That's when I know it's time to order a new bottle even though I might still have plenty of product left. :( This is incredibly frustrating because I feel like for the $$, it should have a longer shelf life... better yet, sell smaller bottles with less product and a little cheaper. I have tried twice to contact Skin Medica to ask them about this and after 20 min on hold, I get annoyed and hang up. If it weren't for the miracle it works on my skin when I open a new bottle, I would never order this again out of principle. It's such a waste of money but at my age, I am sucking it up. If SM ever reads this: D*** YOU!

I've used some intro retinol serums for the past 3 months, so my skin is not completely new to retinol. I was a little hesitant at first to go with the 1.0 because I wasn't sure if that would be too big of a jump. But it turned out totally okay! I didn't feel any irritation or burning or peeling. The product goes on gently and seems to absorb well. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do this, but I did use more than the suggested 1 pump, because I just couldn't get that 1 pump to cover my entire face. Even with more than 1 pump, it still didn't irritate me, so I'm really happy with this and can see myself sustainability use it for a long time. No scent whatsoever, not sticky, great feeling overall.

A Little Goes a Long Way
I've never used a retinol product before, but was stirred to the SkinMedica brand, and this product, by my dermatologist. I'm in my 60's, never took care of my skin, olive complexion, and loved being outside all my life. Although it took me 6 months for my skin to get used to this product in concert with other products in this brand, I now am able to use it 2 times per week without the large-scale peeling and redness I experienced initially.
