Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Retinoid Acne Treatment from La Roche-Posay is an FDA-approved prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment. This oil-free, fragrance-free acne treatment contains adapalene gel, a dermatologist recommended retinoid. Retinoids, such as adapalene, are vitamin A derivatives that regulate skin cell turnover to help clear skin and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes.
Key Ingredients:
- Adapalene: a prescription-strength retinoid that regulates skin cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and treat acne
Key Benefits:
- Helps clear blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes
- Prevents new acne from forming
- Oil-free and non-comedogenic; fragrance-free
Tip: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes topical retinoids as a treatment of choice for mild, moderate and severe acne. Adapalene 0.1% is FDA approved to be safe and effective for over-the-counter use.
Use once daily. Clean the skin gently with a cleanser such as Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser for normal to dry skin, or Effaclar Purifying Gel for normal to oily skin and pat dry before applying the product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer. For example, if your acne is on the face, apply the product to the entire face. Do not use more than one time a day. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results, but may worsen skin irritation. During the early weeks of use, your acne may appear to worsen before it improves (this is normal); continue use as directed, unless you get irritation that becomes severe. Irritation is more likely to occur in the first few weeks of use or if using more than one topical acne medication at a time but irritation usually lessens with continued use of this product. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results. Using a gentle cleanser, like Toleriane Moisturizer, can help offset these side effects. It may take up to 3 months of once daily use to see results. Apply a sunscreen, such as Anthelios Clear Skin, to protect skin against sensitivity to the sun often caused by retinoids. For further instructions, refer to the Drug Facts on the packaging.
Retinoid vs. retinol, what’s the difference?
Both Retinol and Adapalene are considered retinoids – meaning they are both derived from Vitamin A. Retinol is a gentle retinoid widely available over the counter and often used in anti-aging creams or serums. Adapalene is a prescription-strength retinoid, now available over-the-counter, recommended by dermatologists for the treatment of acne. Adapalene is a more potent derivative of Vitamin A – making it very effective.

Love Retinoid!
This is a very good alternative to tretinoin that requires a prescription! You would need to use it for a couple of months to see results!

Gentle enough for every day use
Have been using every day to every other day for the past several weeks with no significant irritation, dry skin or redness (which happened anytime I tried stronger retinoids). Though it's only been a short period of time, my skin is overall improved, acne breakouts have definitely decreased and blemishes seem to heal faster with less scarring. I also really appreciate the product consistency, smooth application that doesn't pill or feel weird under moisturizer. Would recommend for sensitive acne-prone skin that hasn't been able to tolerate other retinoid formulations.

Great for skin
This is an anti-acne product but since it's made with Retin-A, it is also an excellent chemical exfoliant. My skin hasn't been this soft in awhile!

Use it every other night!
After I started using this product every other night for more than 2 weeks or so, the raised leftover acne bumps on my face began to internally exfoliate themselves. It really is an incredible product. I have oily, acne prone skin for reference. Its not utterly magical but its pretty damn impressive.

Great product
Great product for those with light acne and black heads like me. I have been using the same formula since I was a teenager in Brazil and got so excited when I found out that one of my favorite brands started offering it with no prescription - that is even easier and cheaper since I am buying it in US now. So happy because it works very weIl just like all other products from the brand.

Best OTC Product for Acne
Adapalene is 100% my go-to for fighting acne. It's gentle as far as retinoids go, dries completely matte with no stickiness, makes my skin super smooth, fights breakouts, and is one of the few retinoid options out there that doesn't contain ingredients that might aggravate malassezia folliculitis.

Effective!
Very effective retinoid and acne treatment! I found this much more effective than the retinol I was using previously. I find that applying it over my moisturizer prevents too much irritation (also start out slow...just a couple times a week). I love how affordable this is too compared to other retinols that are close to $100!

One of my top favorite products
This product is one of my top favorite products ever. It has made an actual difference in my skin, literally overnight. If I put it on at night, it reduces the redness and size of my spots by the next morning. I've only tried retinols geared towards sensitive skin, and this is by far the most powerful, result-giving one I've tried. It's good for sensitive skin, but isn't completely fool-proof. I've found the best way to wear it is at night, as the bottom layer, topped with a thick moisturizing cream. Whenever I layer other anti-aging products or acids above or beneath it, my skin gets very sensitive, dry, and red. Even though it is a little more gentle, it's still a retinol. 20/10 recommend (also, I didn't experience purging as other reviewers haven't written)

Great stuff
My clogged pores are clear!! It takes some time, but I started seeing results after 1 month and mostly (95%) clear skin after 3 months. Acne scars are fading and my pores are smaller due to less clogging. Love it!!

The gold standard
This is for necessity in every one with troubled skin. It changed my skincare game and helped rejuvenate my skin. Make sure to practice hydration measures while using this and avoid using it in the daytime!
