Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Retinoid Acne Treatment from La Roche-Posay is an FDA-approved prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment. This oil-free, fragrance-free acne treatment contains adapalene gel, a dermatologist recommended retinoid. Retinoids, such as adapalene, are vitamin A derivatives that regulate skin cell turnover to help clear skin and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes.
Key Ingredients:
- Adapalene: a prescription-strength retinoid that regulates skin cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and treat acne
Key Benefits:
- Helps clear blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes
- Prevents new acne from forming
- Oil-free and non-comedogenic; fragrance-free
Tip: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes topical retinoids as a treatment of choice for mild, moderate and severe acne. Adapalene 0.1% is FDA approved to be safe and effective for over-the-counter use.
Use once daily. Clean the skin gently with a cleanser such as Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser for normal to dry skin, or Effaclar Purifying Gel for normal to oily skin and pat dry before applying the product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer. For example, if your acne is on the face, apply the product to the entire face. Do not use more than one time a day. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results, but may worsen skin irritation. During the early weeks of use, your acne may appear to worsen before it improves (this is normal); continue use as directed, unless you get irritation that becomes severe. Irritation is more likely to occur in the first few weeks of use or if using more than one topical acne medication at a time but irritation usually lessens with continued use of this product. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results. Using a gentle cleanser, like Toleriane Moisturizer, can help offset these side effects. It may take up to 3 months of once daily use to see results. Apply a sunscreen, such as Anthelios Clear Skin, to protect skin against sensitivity to the sun often caused by retinoids. For further instructions, refer to the Drug Facts on the packaging.
Retinoid vs. retinol, what’s the difference?
Both Retinol and Adapalene are considered retinoids – meaning they are both derived from Vitamin A. Retinol is a gentle retinoid widely available over the counter and often used in anti-aging creams or serums. Adapalene is a prescription-strength retinoid, now available over-the-counter, recommended by dermatologists for the treatment of acne. Adapalene is a more potent derivative of Vitamin A – making it very effective.

Great retinol
This is the best retinol I have tried - great for dry, sensitive skin. The price point is also a lot cheaper than those I have tried in the past.

Seems to help
I'm still in the first months of using this, so I'm hoping to see more results later on, but so far it was seemed to help with my acne.

Great retinoid
This was the first retinoid I every used and have been satisfied. I have normal/combination skin and my skin experiences minimal redness and dryness. I could see visible improvements in my skin tone. Would definitely recommend this product to retinoid newbies who don't want to go to the derm to get a prescription. Works great!

Learning curve
When I first started using this my normally oily skin became so irritated, sensitive, and developed dry patches that wouldn't go away. I stopped using it but learned than you can apply it over moisturizer. So now I use a pea sized amount on top of a thick moisturizer and it is so much better.

Better than Differin
The ingredients in this product are identical to those in Differin, but I prefer this product because it glides on much easier.

Highly Recommended
I have been using adapalene for a few weeks now and it has made a significant difference in my skin. For the first 2 weeks my skin was dry, but with a nice moisturizer on top it is back to normal. I use it every second day and it has improved the texture of my skin and drastically diminished acne on my skin. It has easily become a staple in my skin regimen. I use only a pea size amount across my entire face, avoiding eyes, area around my lips and neck.

Working well week 1
Been using the product for a week, it immediately cleared up some problem areas. Applying once daily to areas with acne, which has worked great!

Few weeks in -
Great consistency, settles into my skin well, doesn't make my skin feel dry. Haven't noticed too much of a change in my acne/pores but definitely going to keep using it in the evenings and see how things turn out. Update - a few more weeks out and I haven't noticed any changes still with my acne/pores. I don't think I would recommend this.

Effective and works quickly!
Laroche-Posay never disappoints, so I was happy to come across their retinoid cream. I've been using it for about a week but have had no problems adjusting to it. (I was using a different retinoid before I switched so there might not be an adjustment period for my skin). More importantly, it's effective so far. The minor acne issues I've dealt with lately has vanished. I'll keep this product in my evening skincare routine!
