Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Retinoid Acne Treatment from La Roche-Posay is an FDA-approved prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment. This oil-free, fragrance-free acne treatment contains adapalene gel, a dermatologist recommended retinoid. Retinoids, such as adapalene, are vitamin A derivatives that regulate skin cell turnover to help clear skin and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes.
Key Ingredients:
- Adapalene: a prescription-strength retinoid that regulates skin cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and treat acne
Key Benefits:
- Helps clear blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes
- Prevents new acne from forming
- Oil-free and non-comedogenic; fragrance-free
Tip: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes topical retinoids as a treatment of choice for mild, moderate and severe acne. Adapalene 0.1% is FDA approved to be safe and effective for over-the-counter use.
Use once daily. Clean the skin gently with a cleanser such as Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser for normal to dry skin, or Effaclar Purifying Gel for normal to oily skin and pat dry before applying the product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer. For example, if your acne is on the face, apply the product to the entire face. Do not use more than one time a day. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results, but may worsen skin irritation. During the early weeks of use, your acne may appear to worsen before it improves (this is normal); continue use as directed, unless you get irritation that becomes severe. Irritation is more likely to occur in the first few weeks of use or if using more than one topical acne medication at a time but irritation usually lessens with continued use of this product. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results. Using a gentle cleanser, like Toleriane Moisturizer, can help offset these side effects. It may take up to 3 months of once daily use to see results. Apply a sunscreen, such as Anthelios Clear Skin, to protect skin against sensitivity to the sun often caused by retinoids. For further instructions, refer to the Drug Facts on the packaging.
Retinoid vs. retinol, what’s the difference?
Both Retinol and Adapalene are considered retinoids – meaning they are both derived from Vitamin A. Retinol is a gentle retinoid widely available over the counter and often used in anti-aging creams or serums. Adapalene is a prescription-strength retinoid, now available over-the-counter, recommended by dermatologists for the treatment of acne. Adapalene is a more potent derivative of Vitamin A – making it very effective.

Solid
I still have acne, but I have noticed improvement / better control over breakouts using adapalene products. I find this to be just as effective as Differin, which seems to be considered the standard—but sometimes I can find this cheaper, so that's a plus.

Improving my maskne
I'm in my 40s and just recently started having really bad breakouts on my chin/jaw. Spot treatments weren't working so I thought I'd try this. As the product says, it's not a spot treatment and may take up to 3 weeks to start working. I've been using it a couple weeks and my stubborn patch on my chin is finally starting to calm down and I'm hopeful new pimples won't keep sprouting.

Doesn’t do much
I tried for several months hoping this would work, but it does nothing for me. Just makes my skin dry and flaky. Doesn’t clear up blemishes or prevent new ones. Maybe it works for others but not me. A good retinol like Skinceuticals is much more effective.

Unexpectedly Effective
I've read a bit about adapalene perhaps not being as effective as traditional tretinoin but didn't let that stop me, this product is priced and reviewed too well not to give it a shot. I do think this retinoid is effective and I'd recommend to anyone starting their retinoid journey. For best use I'd apply after moisturizer every two days and add days as you see your skin reacting positively, that meaning not red and inflamed, that is not the goal.

Really works!
Over the summer I broke out my really bad acne all over my face. I did research and found Adapalene helps with acne and so happy I purchased this. I’ve been using this for 5 months now and my skin is back to normal with only having the occasional hormonal acne breakout. This is a staple in my skin care

cleared up body acne
I use this on my chest and back acne and it has made a huge difference. My skin looks amazing and both breakouts and post-inflammatory pigmentation are nearly gone. There was a very brief period where my skin got slightly worse, but that is a typical side effect of retinoids so I wasn't too surprised. But my skin never felt too tight or dry, and no irritation or peeling either. Love this stuff!!

Good beginner adapalene
This is my first adapalene treatment after using very gentle rentinoids for a year. It’s great at clearing up acne! I would recommend using it on top of a moisturizer, as even then it can be drying. I was able to use it frequently (almost daily, as I alternate my PM routine sometimes) and didn’t experience peeling or anything like that.

Not a spot treatment
Works after consistent use, so not a spot treatment. It’s an easy formula to use, smooth, a little goes a long way. I find the tube to be easy to get that last bit.

Amazing Starter Retinol
If you're new to retinol, like I was, this is a great gentle retinoid acne treatment. My dermatologist recommended going through a tube before going on a prescription retinol. I wore this every other night with moisturizer on top (like Toleriane or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5). When I graduated to prescription retinol, I got another tube for travel or for friends who are starting on their retinol journey. Highly recommend for retinol newbies! And you can't beat the price and the reputation of this brand!

Outstanding
Nothing I have tried before has helped in my acne journey like this product has. I have been using this for almost a full year know so I can fully say this product is no joke. Of course like with all high strength retinoids, there is an adjustment period, and sometimes depending on the skincare you are using it with , pilling may happen. Everything else is top notch.
