Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Retinoid Acne Treatment from La Roche-Posay is an FDA-approved prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment. This oil-free, fragrance-free acne treatment contains adapalene gel, a dermatologist recommended retinoid. Retinoids, such as adapalene, are vitamin A derivatives that regulate skin cell turnover to help clear skin and prevent blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes.
Key Ingredients:
- Adapalene: a prescription-strength retinoid that regulates skin cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and treat acne
Key Benefits:
- Helps clear blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, and acne blemishes
- Prevents new acne from forming
- Oil-free and non-comedogenic; fragrance-free
Tip: The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes topical retinoids as a treatment of choice for mild, moderate and severe acne. Adapalene 0.1% is FDA approved to be safe and effective for over-the-counter use.
Use once daily. Clean the skin gently with a cleanser such as Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser for normal to dry skin, or Effaclar Purifying Gel for normal to oily skin and pat dry before applying the product. Cover the entire affected area with a thin layer. For example, if your acne is on the face, apply the product to the entire face. Do not use more than one time a day. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results, but may worsen skin irritation. During the early weeks of use, your acne may appear to worsen before it improves (this is normal); continue use as directed, unless you get irritation that becomes severe. Irritation is more likely to occur in the first few weeks of use or if using more than one topical acne medication at a time but irritation usually lessens with continued use of this product. Applying more than directed will not provide faster or better results. Using a gentle cleanser, like Toleriane Moisturizer, can help offset these side effects. It may take up to 3 months of once daily use to see results. Apply a sunscreen, such as Anthelios Clear Skin, to protect skin against sensitivity to the sun often caused by retinoids. For further instructions, refer to the Drug Facts on the packaging.
Retinoid vs. retinol, what’s the difference?
Both Retinol and Adapalene are considered retinoids – meaning they are both derived from Vitamin A. Retinol is a gentle retinoid widely available over the counter and often used in anti-aging creams or serums. Adapalene is a prescription-strength retinoid, now available over-the-counter, recommended by dermatologists for the treatment of acne. Adapalene is a more potent derivative of Vitamin A – making it very effective.

The ONLY product that has helped my skin congestion acne
I have struggled with small, congestion bumps on my cheeks for a really long time. They never really flared up, they were just always present. I've been using this gel for about a month and a half now... and my skin is awful. BUT, I am very hopeful that it is finally (finally!!) helping all of that congestion surface. That being said, I can't know for sure if it is going to help my skin be clear in the long run. I'm staying optimistic and will try to remember to update this review if anything changes. UPDATE 1/8/2020: I was hopeful when I left my initial review, but the results I have seen are truly better than I had hoped for. This product has single-handedly cleared up the small congestion acne that I chronically had all over my cheeks. I tried Accutane, and it helped short term but they came back. I changed to silk pillowcases that I washed all the time. I was obsessive about washing my phone off. I tried product after product... And nothing helped but this. Definitely give this product a try. If things start getting worse, take that as a VERY good sign and keep going. I'm so glad I randomly found this product.

Game Changer
I have sensitive, dry, acne prone skin and this product helped clear up existing breakouts (including the stubborn ones) prevented new ones from coming and made the texture of my skin completely smooth. It is not over drying, doesn't turn my skin red like most retinol products and I love the texture. This product has a permanent spot in my skincare routine now! My skin has never been this clear!

THE best product for acne
I have mild cystic acne and oily skin. I've used retinoids in the past from dermatologists and they worked. This works exactly the same without having to go to the dermatologist. I use this every other night (since it can dry out your skin) and I swear after a week my acne is beginning to calm down. On the nights I don't use this, I don't do anything to let my skin breathe (which I know sounds crazy to people with acne). But then my skin is even more receptive to the gel. 100% recommend as someone who has tried everything!!
