Whiteheads, also known as closed comedones, are a form of acne caused when pores clog with dead skin cells, dirt and excess natural oil. They are similar to blackheads , except that they form under the surface of closed pores and therefore lack the dark color that blackheads get from oxidation from the air. Whiteheads are particularly common in the T-zone of the forehead, chin and nose, although the temples are also vulnerable due to their proximity to the hair line.
All skin types can get whiteheads, but they crop up most often for those with overactive sebaceous glands (resulting from genetic factors, hormonal changes, or environmental stressors). Those with acne-prone skin also tend to have stickier pore walls which hang on to more bacteria, dead skin cells and debris, resulting in more whiteheads.
Dermstore offers a selection of professional whitehead treatments for those with mild, moderate or severe acne concerns. Facial washes that feature salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are perfect for loosening embedded plugs of dirt and oil while preventing future occurrences.
