How to Prevent Hair Loss When Losing Weight

While the positives to a slimmer waistline are certainly numerous, you can sometimes experience adverse affects, such as hair loss. There are also cases when you lose weight unexpectedly and rapidly, which can also lead to hair thinning. In either case, you ultimately want to consult with a doctor to address your unique concerns. You can take other measures, as well, to slow and prevent hair loss while losing weight.

Lose Weight Slowly

When your body undergoes major changes, such as sudden weight loss, it reacts in myriad ways. Abrupt weight loss is more likely to startle, or shock, your body, which can lead to increased likelihood of hair loss. For many, this hair loss is most noticeable on the scalp, but you also can experience lost hair on other parts of the body. Avoid crash diets and extreme fasting and instead opt for gradual weight loss. The goal is to create a sustainable lifestyle. Speak with your doctor to create a diet and workout regimen that's healthy for you.

Get Your Protein and Iron

Protein-rich foods that are also high in iron are vital to a healthy body, especially when losing weight. Insufficient iron intake can also lead to hair loss. While dieting, and in general, you should consume lean meats, fish, nuts, beans or even supplementary protein via powders or bars to get enough iron. Foods high in iron include soybeans, iron-fortified cereals, spinach and organ meats. You can also take iron supplements, but talk to your doctor about the appropriate amounts.

Don't Overdo Your Vitamin A

While you want to increase your protein and iron consumption, too much vitamin A can stifle hair growth. Typically, excessive vitamin A intake is the result of taking medicines or too many vitamin supplements. It's all about moderation when it comes to getting the right nutrients your body requires.
