How to Transition Your Skincare From Summer to Fall

woman with glowing skin

While I am a beach bum and soak up the sun in the Summer, I’m excited for all that comes along with a seasonal transition into Fall: think pumpkin spice lattes, spooky movies, and pointed toe boots. But above all else, the change of weather and routine always comes with a change of skincare regimen as well. Fall in love with these fall skincare tips, tricks (& treats!)

How You Skin Changes During the Fall

When the temperatures start to drop, my typically oily skin type tends to become a bit drier due to less humidity in the air. You may experience seasonal skin concerns that range from breakouts to redness to dullness as well. I have a few beauty secrets up my cashmere sleeves to soothe your skin during the time of transition.

1. Start with a Clean Slate

First things first, make sure to use a proper cleanser (read: not just a makeup wipe!) to start your skincare routine with a fresh, clean slate. While it may be counterintuitive, I recommend a cleansing oil texture such as DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil to remove any excess oil, makeup, dirt, etc. Now that’s what I call a soap opera.

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Key Ingredients: Essential Oils, Olive Oil, Vitamin E

Skin Type: Dry Skin, Mature Skin, Normal Skin

Beauty Insider Tip: This formula contains Olive Oil- which is a trending skincare ingredient for an excellent reason! Just as I love to incorporate it into my cooking, olive oil has great nourishing benefits for skin to hydrate skin without leaving a greasy pizza-like residue on my face after.

2. Drop Everything for the Serums

I love to test out serums with highly active ingredients to achieve my “fountain of youth” complexion. One of my fan favorites is the Osmosis Catalyst DNA Repair C Serum, as I recommend incorporating antioxidants like Vitamin C into your daytime Fall skincare routine to protect against harsher weather conditions.

Key Ingredients: Vitamin C, Amino Acids

Skin Type: Acne-Prone Skin, Combination Skin, Dry Skin, Mature Skin, Normal Skin, Oily Skin, Sensitive Skin

SkinCeuticals also recently launched a game changing new product called the P-TIOX Anti- Winkle Peptide Serum, which is chock full of perfectly powerful peptides to reduce the appearance of expression lines- no needles needed.

3. Richest Cream of the Crop

Moisturizers are a must-have to seal in the benefits from your serums. During this transitional time of year with the drop in temperatures, opt for products with deeper hydration properties and richer formulas such as Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream or Embryolisse’s Lait Cream Concentrate Moisturizer.

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream

Key Ingredients: TFC8 complex of natural Amino Acids, Primrose Oil, Squalane, Vitamin E

Skin Type: Dry Skin, Mature Skin, Normal Skin

Embryolisse Lait Cream Concentrate Moisturizer

Key Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Shea Butter

Skin Type: Dry

4. SPF: Sun-Kissed, Not Sunburned

Just like I have a sunny disposition all year round, the sun keeps shining too! No matter the season, it is so important to prioritize using SPF in your skincare routine daily to protect signs of visible aging for the long term. I recommend using these 2 options:

EltaMD’s UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 has a lightweight texture to protect my acne-prone skin from breakouts. This formula layers great under foundation too as it calms skin while leaving no residue behind.

5. Weekly Exfoliate Date

Fall transition is the perfect time to remove any build-up from summer products or sun damage. During my nighttime skin routine, I layer in an exfoliator to ensure I unclog my pores, boost circulation for a glowing complexion, and slough off any dead skin cells (RIP to those skin cells). Demalogica has an amazing Daily Microfoliant that’s gentle enough to use daily with a super unique texture from the rice-based powder that turns into a creamy paste when in contact with water.

Another great option is the Dr. Whitney Bowe Beauty’s Exfoliation Night Resurfacing & Brightening Serum. With a clinically proven formula created by dermatologist-founder Dr. Bowe, this is a product that has the science back credentials to support its efficacy.

6. Add to you Tool Kit

For any skin congestion and clogged pores you experience coming out of Summer- the Dermaflash Dermapore + is the best tool to be able to extract those tricky pores at home. As a bonus, it comes in fun colors like Barbie pink and seafoam green that makes it super giftable for any upcoming Fall birthdays (hint: any fellow Scorpios in the crowd?)

The Bottom Line

Embrace the winds of change from this seasonal transition with your new favorite Fall skincare essentials to keep your skin happy, hydrated, and healthy- always!
